When was the last time you ate something so incredibly delicious it left you asking… “What’s the secret sauce?” In some ways the same can be said about writing. What makes this book, this screenplay so good?
Writing is sort of like an ocean. It has swells and troughs. It sometimes has violent storms or a surface as smooth as glass. Sometimes the view ahead is shrouded in fog and at other times it’s clear from horizon to horizon. That’s writing by oneself. Now add a team dynamic and you’ve suddenly compounded the highs and the lows.
But there’s something fun and exciting about working as a team. You share your thoughts, make your points, think through mental blocks and word choice. You struggle an hour, or two, to write one sentence. You also share the joy and the pain, the sense of completion and the love of your work.
Success while writing as a duo requires things like: respect, trust, being open minded, flexibility, being willing to concede, checking your ego at the door, and it’s a bonus to share a wicked sense of humor. There may be times you want to kill each other, and other times when you want to give each other a pat on the bottom.
You can do anything by yourself, but it’s so much more joyful and rewarding when you can do it as a team. Consider the team as having… all the “write” ingredients to make the special sauce. And after all it’s the sauce that adds the flava’! ;)
