“I’m bored, I wish I had something to do.”
Words I have never spoken.
I’ve always had too much to do. A job, sports, and studying while in school. Nights and weekends spent at the office. A briefcase full of office work taken along on vacation. And that was BEFORE I became a writer.
One day, I wanted to write. There were stories to tell. Places and times to visit. Characters to fall in love with. A kindred soul, my writing partner, then said, ‘OK then, let’s write.”
Finding the time meant embracing the madness. At home by 6 PM, then writing by 7 PM. Many nights. Note pads and pens in cars and bathrooms. Out with friends or family? A time for research and idea validation. And, oh the lovable Saturdays...! Writing by 6 AM, a shower at lunch, and dinner next to my laptop. Oh yeah, and that smile on my face.
Writing doesn’t happen. You make it happen. It becomes what you do. It defines who you are. It shares your pillow each night.
Embrace the madness in life as a writer. You can’t do it all… Do what’s important… Write.
Andrew Carnegie once said, “My life is in the work.” It sounds like he was never bored.
